The Atlantic Hurricane Season peak is here and Igor, with almost perfect timing, continues to strengthen. It is the season`s fourth hurricane, and could become a major hurricane by Monday afternoon.
As of 2 p.m. EDT, Hurricane Igor was located near 17.7 N, 46.1 W, or about 1,120 miles east of the Leeward Islands. This places it about 2,300 miles east-southeast of Miami. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 135 mph, making Igor a Category 4 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Igor is moving to the west at 14 mph and its minimum central pressure is 28.05 inches or 950 mb.
WeatherBug Meteorologist John Bateman has the latest on Igor in this exclusive WeatherBug Tropical Outlook Video.
Igor will continue moving westward, and will continue to feed off warm Atlantic waters. Along with little shear along its path, Hurricane Igor will continue to strengthen and could reach top-of-the-scale Category 5 hurricane by Tuesday.
Despite the rapid strengthening, Igor will remain at sea through at least the middle of next week. From there, the forecast models disagree on where it will go, with several of them directing the storm northward off the East Coast. Interests in the Caribbean, Bermuda and the East Coast should keep a close watch on the system as it gets closer to land by the middle and latter part of next week.
Elsewhere in the tropics, Tropical Depression 12 has formed off the western coast of Africa. If this becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Julia. There is also another area of concern in the Caribbean that has a chance to become a tropical depression as well
