The eastern to central equatorial Pacific Ocean has shown some warming in January

Summary: Eastern Pacific shows some warming

The eastern to central equatorial Pacific Ocean has shown some warming in January following the cooling which occurred in December. As a result, current sea surface temperatures in the far-eastern Pacific are now back in the neutral range. Below the surface, warming has also been observed in the western half of the basin during January. Atmospheric indicators, which showed the strongest La Niña signals, also weakened during January. These include trade winds, which are now close to normal across much of the central and eastern equatorial Pacific, and the SOI, which though weaker, remains firmly positive, with a 30-day (January 26) value of +9.
In addition, most current model outlooks, and the eastward propagation of warmer sub-surface water from the western equatorial Pacific, suggest that the cooler surface conditions in the Pacific may not persist much beyond summer 2009. The most likely scenario is for the central and eastern Pacific to warm further over the coming months and to remain neutral.
